Verb 'to be'
Verb 'to be'

Learning the verb to be in English can be challenging for Spanish speakers because, unlike Spanish, where there are two different verbs (ser and estar)! English uses only one. This often confuses students when deciding whether to say I am, you are, or it is in different situations. In Spanish, ser is used for permanent characteristics (Yo soy alto), while estar is used for temporary states (Yo estoy cansado), but in English, both translate to to be.

Understanding how to use am, is, and are correctly is essential for building basic sentences, introducing yourself, describing people or places, and expressing feelings. With clear examples, side-by-side translations, and lots of speaking practice, Spanish speakers can master this foundational verb and start communicating confidently in English.
